On the left is a rock path I built to guide hikers away from the cliffs edge. On the right is a rock retaining wall to protect hikers from falling rocks and boulders.
This particular hiking path has high elevation exposed bluffs with lose dirt, rocks and boulders. As it rains, these loosen and become a liability as can they fall any time. The walls are built to prevent injury to hikers, surfers and pets.
In this photo you can see the size of the boulders that fall from the top of the bluffs. Some of these weigh over 100 pounds.
